I learned how to cook dry beans from scratch from when I was a kid, in high school, working at Taco Bell. Back in the day, we'd open a big bag of dry pinto beans, we'd pick out the ugly beans and the rocks, rinse the beans, and put the beans in a huge pressure cooker pot along with lard and salt. We'd lock down that pot and it'd cook for like a couple of hours or until the pot started whistle and we'd turn off the heat. I am pretty sure that my parents didn't know that as a 16 year old kid, that I was working with a pressure cooker, hot grease to make tacos and tostadas and those mandolin types of machines to shred the lettuce and cheese.
However, in this quick 1 minute video, the guy shows you how to cook the beans in a regular pot...and save money!
