On my blog, I have spoken about this incessantly that I have two Vons in my neighborhood that are very close to each other. I've cropped out the Vons that's across the street to show how close we are to Vons #2, Albertsons downtown San Diego and finally, we suddenly have a new Pavilions on West Washington Street!
The Pavilions is actually is what used to be Vons on West Washington and they converted the Vons into a Pavilions. I assume that the Pavilions I spotted La Jolla is also a converted Vons store.
The Pavilions on West Washington had been completely gutted and renovated around ten years ago because before the renovation, it looked like a grocery from the 1960's but that store now has underground parking, it's a much more modernized grocery store for San Diegans. I want to say they have a Starbucks with a little sitting area but I could incorrect about the sitting area.
Like going to the grocery stores in Northern California is like an experience is the only way I can explain it. When you walk into the Safeway, it's bright and airy with plenty of room to walk around with your cart with ease.
Anyways, I suspect that they are converting the recently remodeled Vons into Pavilions. I think that they will probably convert the Vons in Claremont Mesa on Balboa Ave. because that store has been remodeled within the last 5 years but maybe not because they didn't increase the footprint of that store.
Honestly, the Vons on Zion with Rite Aid closed, they should get with whoever owns that small strip mall and turn it into a nice Pavilions. There is a ton of people that live in the area...and it's the only grocery store in the area...and it's right next to the main Kaiser Hospital in San Diego.
Honestly, we could make these grocery stores some money but they are too busy paying their CEO millions and paying for private planes, house payments and other CEO compensation packages. What they pay CEO's in the 1990's when Lee Iococoa was CEO of Chrysler. Nowadays, everything is negotiable as far as compensation packages goes.
We shall see, in the future, as to which store next will be turned into a Pavilions!
