They built a Safeway right next to the Walmart

Northern California is built differently than Southern California because I remember when I came home at the end of 2019 and my brother was telling me that the Walmart Neighborhood Store that was down the street from him had been shuttered because the Winco had lowered their prices to beat Walmart and to drive them out of business.

During the Pandemic Lockdowns, Sacramento literally turned highway 50 into six lane freeways and rerouted the 80 freeway that goes to the Bay Area away from downtown and created a new way to get there using the same 80 freeway.

What use to be miles of old farm land and opened fields is now overflowing with new homes, parks, restaurants, hotels and stores.

A lot of the changes is due to a lot of the people from the Bay Area moved to Sacramento to find affordable housing and honestly, the cities of Sacramento county stepped up accommodate the need for more housing, stores, parks, restaurants, etc.

As a community, there is a price to pay for rapid growth is that service workers do not have affordable housing and they become unhoused.

Anyways, image my shock when we went to the Walmart and I saw a new Safeway grocery store with a Safeway gas station next to Walmart.  Like they literally share the same parking lot.

I guess Safeway management said "We are coming for Walmart."

In Northern California, Safeway is a revered institution and people have worked at the Safeway generationally but also keep in mind that Raley's is another iconic grocery store in Northern California with families having generational employment with this company.

Safeway building a grocery store with a gas station right next to the Walmart was sending a message to Walmart.
