Walmart IS Closing Self Checkout in San Diego

During the Christmas holidays, there were news stories about Walmart removing all Self Checkout registers in Maine and Massachusetts due to high thefts.

The Walmart off of Murphy Canyon Road is my nearest Walmart BUT it's a small store as it doesn't meat, fresh produce, it doesn't have a bakery nor deli.  Sometime between Thanksgiving and Christmas, you could only use self checkout if:

1. You had a Walmart employee standing next you.

2. In December, they changed the rule to only a Walmart employee could ring up them items in self checkout.

Between Thursday, February 15th through Monday, February 19th, I was in four different Walmarts and three of the four Walmarts had closed the Self Checkouts.  Only, the National City Walmart, still had their Self Checkout still open. Shawline, College, Murphy Canyon Self Checkout is closed.

At the Murphy Canyon Walmart, the lines to registers with a cashier were so long that I literally left the stuff off to the side and left the store.

Let me know, in the comments, has your Walmart closed Self Checkout?

  1. During the huge rainstorm weather this month, the Walmart near me had self checkout completely roped off and closed. We were forced to go to the two or three manned cashiers. 🤬

    1. Yikes! Now, every time, they announce that we are getting heavy rains, the grocery stores are packed like they were during the early onset of the COVID lockdowns. The meat shelves were almost empty on Saturday, people shopping carts were filled to the brim. After the floods, we had in January, people are not taking any chances and they are stocking up on food anytime they say we are have rains here.

  2. So far, so good here in OC (Brea, La Habra)....all self-checkouts are still open. The La Habra store must have about ten self-checkouts in a square-shaped area and the lines move nice and quickly.

    1. All but one store had the SCO in the square shape except the National City store which all of their registers are SCO's, that store has no registers with a cashier. The Walmart is the only national grocery chain store in the National City, it's a "food desert" meaning for some odd reason, they have no grocery stores in that city.

    1. The SCO's are still there but they are now roped off so that customers cannot go to the SCO's with the exception being the National City store where they no longer have cash registers for cashiers.

  4. In Chandler, Az towards the end of the day usually the only registers open are self checkout and they have them at each end of the store. This is not a super Walmart ( big ) or a neighborhood Walmart ( smaller) its in between those in size. I haven't seen any self checkout registers permanently closed in the Phoenix area.

    1. I have actually visited Walmarts throughout the state of California and to me, even though we have Walmarts that claim to be Super Walmarts...they still are not as humongous as the Super Walmarts that I've visited in Texas and Florida.🤣

It's been long time since I've been to Walmart late night so I don't how they operated the SCO as their closing. I have not seen stealing or police in the store for gangs of people stealing like I've seen on TV at Walmart but I have seen it at the grocery store which is wild. It's bad when people are stealing groceries.

  5. I've never seen it in person at all. I have watched the videos on u tube when people run in and steal expensive channel brands and designer purses online. I agree with you Ms B.

    1. My nearest mall, Fashion Valley Mall, is down the hill from me about 2 miles and it is a designer mall, I can go to the Chanel store and look at whatever I want in person, same with Gucci, Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Bottega, Dior and I've personally, not seen the smash & grabs but is a lot of security at the Fashion Valley mall. In fact, when my brother, David, was here in July, he had forgotten to bring his belt and we went to the mall to get him a belt my brother was blown away by the designer stores and the security bc in Sacramento they don't have any designer malls.

However, at the Ralphs, on several occasions, I have seen lots of people running out of the store with carts of foods.🤣
