Is the Piggly Wiggly coming to California?

A reader, Nick, had left a comment about the Piggly Wiggly:

I did hear some interesting news at a Pavilions. Kroger isn’t converting that particular store. And a manager told me someone called C&S (if I heard right) is picking them up. I asked “Who’s that???” and he said it’s Piggly Wiggly. What on Earth are they doing all the way out here in California? Haven’t seen those since I lived in Atlanta decades ago before I even met Wifey!

As a young child, I lived in Florida because my dad was in the Air Force and he had to go fight in the Vietnam War and they didn't know if my dad was going to make it back to his wife and kids. My maternal grandparents had already passed away so my grandfather was to help take care of my mom and us kids, if dad didn't make it back from the war.

I said all that because I remembered the Piggly Wiggly, the A & P and Publix grocery stores. My mom would drive to the grocery store and she would leave the three of us in the back seat...and I was in charge of the other two while she was inside the store.🤣

Anyways, I did a quick google search and this is a list of stores, in California, that was bought by C & S Wholesale Grocers, the owners of the Piggly Wiggly.

In San Diego, the Vons and Albertsons stores in the more populated area/neighborhoods, I assume those stores will be converted in Ralphs stores. I've said many times on this blog that I have a Vons across the street and another Vons a mile away and another Vons like 3 miles going north and another Vons 3 miles away going west.

I live in a very densely populated area AND our spending dollars supports of the multiples of Vons, Ralphs, Whole Foods, Sprouts, Trader Joe's, Smart & Final, Food 4 Less, Baron's in this area...but we don't have any Dollar Trees.

I do wonder if National City is going to finally have a grocery store (Piggy Wiggly?) besides Walmart?

Anyways, you can read about the proposed merger HERE.

  1. That would be interesting, as there is a saturation of F4L, Ralph's, Vons, Albertson's, and Pavilions around where I live.

However, there is only two stores (an Albertson's and a Pavilions) that is on the list above.

    1. None of the stores on the list are in my area but interestingly enough there are stores on the list that are in La Jolla, Carlsbad and some other neighborhoods that I was shocked to see on the list. Where are they shopping for groceries, if not Vons or Albertsons? They get a Piggly Wiggly but we don't get no Piggly Wiggly?🤣 For whatever reason, San Diegans do not like Aldi's bc when they first came to town, we had like 4 stores...I think we are down to 1 Aldi's. They put the Aldi's in weird locations and if I have to drive 15 minutes from the freeway, up to the top of a canyon, the prices had better be really, really good...AND I already know people are keen on renting a cart even though they get their money back once the cart is returned. San Diegans are busy, they don't have the time to try an figure out how to get a cart!🤣
